Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Jill Scott was raised by her maternal grandparents and mother. She is an only-child. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. In between two job opportunities as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become an instructor of English in a secondary school. The dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was cut short after she dropped out of school. Her first job was as a spoken-word artist performing her own pieces at live poetry readings and later joined forces to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. Her first public appearance was as an artiste at a Roots Show. She then secured collaborations, which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
